CALF AT TOTNELL, DORSET
This small calf appeared in our garden one Sunday morning. We later learnt that he was newly-weaned and getting used to being bucket fed. However he had decided to explore from his farm home 1/2 mile away. We shut the yard gate to keep him from going back onto the road. He then nonchalantly wandered down to the vegetable garden and stepped over the low rabbit-proof fencing. Not a good place for him… In the end we persuaded him into our field – luckily empty of other occupants, and stock-proof. We located the owner in a couple of phone calls, and the adventurous calf was later collected*. Meanwhile, we had watched him gingerly practising grazing, perhaps for the first time.
*We weren’t there. It transpired that when approached, the calf had objected, jumped a barbed wire fence, a broad hedge (slightly trashed) and a ditch to reach the road, and run down the hill into the village… After a moderately dramatic finale involving several people, he was caught and put in the field where he should have been in the first place, before his adventure…
