We recently came across this striking purple iris and I was struck by the rich colouring. They aren’t rare, I know, but they are certainly less usual than the common blue / mauve varieties; and also than the more familiar yellow ones (shown below).

Beautiful iris. Iris are amazingly hardy plants and I admire them for it. They have such a short season but they do make a splash. I love most of the colours. Amelia
The dark one was very striking, growing wild by the Marne when we were in Fr. the other day – the last time we saw sunshine! Not sure I’ve noticed quite that rich colour before… but I’m not a great flower person. Hollyhocks. I like them. Mrs RH does not. She wins. On that, anyway!
I love Hollyhocks and I have masses in the garden. They self-seed so I never know what colour they will be. I believe they can be subject to rust and get a bit mouldy in the UK so Mrs RH probably knows best.
Thanks Lucy. The yellow ones seem to be doing really well this year for some reason. Our pond is full of them, also pondweed which I am scooping out with a child’s shrimping net – the perfect thing! RH

Gorgeous. We have yellow irises in the pond and blue irises in the bog garden. Lovely plants.
